and the true tragedy about that is that with his return, Sherlock will show John that he was, in fact, a fake. A part of him was always a lie, that part that would leave his best friend alone for three years, that would leave him behind in the assumption that he is dead and won’t return.

Sherlock’s motives don’t count here. What counts is that he has betrayed John by protecting him, and that John has always defended a man he will consider a liar once he returns to life.
